Overview

You never want to lose out on showing your customers relevant products? We got you covered! To give you full control, you can utilize two different types of Fallbacks.

  1. Use Bundle fallbacks to keep the contents of a Bundle valid (for example, replacing an out-of-stock item inside the Bundle). Y

  2. Use Recommendation fallbacks to keep the placement itself filled (for example, when there is no eligible Bundle to show).

Understanding both layers helps you avoid empty slots and unexpected gaps in the shopper experience.

Bundle-Fallbacks

Bundle fallbacks operate within a single Bundle:

  • They are configured when you create or edit a Bundle.

  • The second section of the Bundle editor is called “Fallbacks”.

  • In this section, you see all products in the Bundle, each with an option to “Add fallback”.

  • Fallbacks are used when a specific product in the Bundle is:

    • Out of stock,

    • Deactivated, or

    • Otherwise not eligible to be shown.

When that happens, Nosto replaces the unavailable product with one of the fallbacks you defined, so the Bundle can still be shown as intended.

What you can configure:

  • For each eligible product in the Bundle, you can add:

    • One or more specific products as fallbacks, and/or

    • dynamic products based on attributes.

  • You can add up to 3 products as fallbacks for each Bundle product. As a fallback you can add:

    • A specific product, or

    • A dynamic, attribute-based product.

  • Attribute-Products (products that are in the Bundle via an attribute rule rather than as a specific SKU) cannot have fallbacks.

    • Attribute-Products that have been set as fallbacks can also not have another fallback.

Configuring Bundle fallbacks

Step 1 – Open the Bundle

  • In Nosto, open the Bundle you want to configure (either create a new Bundle or edit an existing one).

Step 2 – Go to the “Fallbacks” section

  • Go to the second section of the Bundle editor named “Fallbacks”.

  • You will see a list of all products included in the Bundle.

Step 3 – Add fallbacks for each product

  • For a product that should have a fallback, click “Add fallback”.

  • Choose whether to:

    • Select specific products to act as direct replacements, or

    • Define a dynamic, attribute-based rule (for example, same category, price range, or brand).

Step 4 – Add up to 3 fallback products

  • Add one or more fallback products for that Bundle item, up to 3 in total.

  • Arrange them in the desired priority order if applicable.

Step 5 – Save the Bundle

  • Save or update the Bundle so the fallback configuration is applied.

Result: If the original product becomes unavailable (for example, out of stock or deactivated), Nosto automatically uses the defined fallback products to keep the Bundle valid and show it to shoppers.

How Recommendation Fallbacks Work with Bundles

Fallback behavior options

Fallback behavior defines how the fallback is used when the minimum product criteria for the primary Recommendation cannot be fully met.

You set this at Step 5 – “Fallbacks” when configuring the Recommendation.

There are two key behaviors:

  1. “Fill with fallback”

    • The primary Recommendation stays, and the fallback only fills empty slots.

    • Example:

      • Minimum items in the slot: 4

      • Bundle has 2 available products.

    • With “Fill with fallback”:

      • 2 products come from the Bundle.

      • 2 products come from the fallback (for example, best-sellers).

  2. “Replace with a fallback”

    • If the primary Recommendation cannot meet its minimum product criteria, it is entirely replaced by the fallback.

    • Example:

      • Maximum items in the slot: 4

      • No eligible Bundle has enough products.

    • With “Replace with a fallback”:

      • The slot skips the Bundle

      • The Fallback-Recommendation will be shown instead.

Note: Fallback options offer the same configuration options as the primary Recommendation. They inherit the styling of the primary Recommendation, so the slot looks consistent.
