This article covers the segmentation sync. The tutorial covering Nosto Email Widgets for dotdigital can be found here.

The segment integration between Nosto and dotdigital uploads and adds Nosto segment name as an additional data field to a contact in dotdigital. The property includes the segment name and enables possibility to create and curate contact lists in dotdigital based on Nosto segments or for example dynamically changing the content in dotdigital's emails.

Curating and creating targeting lists allows more granular targeting according to Nosto segments (i.e. better email targeting) whereas the latter, allows more options to dynamically change the content using dynamic content block function, which for example enables the change to main content banners in emails depending on shopper's buying preferences.

Example of dotdigital's contact detail below. The data field nostosegment is added by the integration, whereas values Loyal Customers and Affinity: Nike are updated and added to the contact, reflecting the segments the contact belongs to according to Nosto's segmentation.

Enable the integration by navigating to Settings > Integrations and connect your Nosto account to dotdigital by using your dotdigital account's API username and API password.

Once submitted, the integration is ready and you can choose to synchronize preferred Nosto segments. To sync only email Widgets, you don't need to enable the email upload and sync.

If you enable the toggle Enable Daily Segment Sync a prompt will be displayed to confirm the email upload. Please review your dotdigital settings as advised below before proceeding.

The integration will not create duplicate emails/entries or overwrite any data associated with existing contacts. The integration neither includes marketing consent (opt-in / opt-out) detail for contacts, but will only add a segment name as the contact property. If Nosto does have a contact that is new to dotdigital, it is created as a new contact without the marketing consent detail. That is, marketing consent property will be left empty/unknown for new contacts to dotdigital, hence marketing consent is managed in dotdigital, not in or by Nosto.

Before activating the integration
Before enabling the email upload, please make sure that dotdigital doesn’t automatically dispatch emails when new emails or address books are uploaded and created. These are typically daily enrolling emails or automated messages when a new contact joins an address book. Please review that emails are not sent when marketing consent is left empty/unknown and also note that the rules might differ from your default configuration as emails are uploaded by leveraging dotdigital API.

After confirming the connection, the integration will upload all email addresses processed by Nosto to dotdigital by creating a new address book within the next 1-24 hours. Next, you need to choose the segment(s) you would like to sync to dotdigital.

Navigate next to Segmentation & Insights view and select the segment you would like to add and synchronize into dotdigital by clicking the pen icon on top of the segment. In the example Outdoor Enthusiasts Organic. This will open up the synchronization menu.

Choose dotdigital from the selection, toggle the switch and save, which will synchronize the selected segment into Data Field property in dotdigital contact.

Instead of creating new contacts, Nosto adds a Data Field property NOSTOSEGMENTS into existing contacts with an identical value to Nosto segment name that you have created in the Nosto admin. Based on the value (Nosto segment name) you can create inclusion and exclusion rules for your campaigns in dotdigital's interface.

Following the example Outdoor Enthusiasts Organic segment, create a new segment in dotdigital by choosing Data Fields as an inclusion rule and narrow down by segment's name stored in NOSTOSEGMENT as in the example screenshots below.
