Best practices for merchants:

  • Pick and order the products you want to promote during BFCM as early as possible

  • Test the store beforehand, if possible

  • Build a dedicated BFCM collection that’s fully tagged beforehand (especially important for smart collections). On Black Friday just perform price adjustments/updates in a specific time slot for this collection.

  • Review and update product data (such as inventory, pricing, collections, and metafields) well in advance of BFCM to reduce the number or API calls and system loads

  • Group non-essential product updates (e.g. metafield changes that are not urgent) and schedule them during off-peak hours to reduce the real-time load during BFCM

  • Finalize SKU or catalog changes early, and avoid making large changes during the peak event itself. Large catalog updates can trigger massive data synchronization, which could lead to overload during high-traffic periods.

  • Pre-schedule promotional product updates, such as discounts or special collections, to go live automatically using Shopify's scheduling features. This reduces the need for manual updates during peak times.

  • Ensure inventory data is up-to-date and synchronized with fulfillment centers well before BFCM. Avoiding last-minute inventory sync operations can prevent excessive webhook and API calls during the event.

  • Limit real-time updates to only essential actions like inventory level adjustments or price changes during peak periods.
