Meta recently announced the deprecation of the Instagram Basic Display API, effective December 4th, 2024. You can find more information here: Meta Announcement.

At Nosto, this API is an important part of our Rights via Registration flow, allowing content creators with any account type (personal or professional) to log in and provide usage rights for their content.

With this deprecation, Instagram will no longer support third-party providers like Nosto in offering authentication for personal accounts. As a result, we will no longer be able to allow content creators (unless they have an Instagram Professional account) to log into their Instagram account as part of the Rights via Registration flow, so we need to update the current workflow.

What’s Changing?

The new Rights via Registration flow for Instagram introduces the following changes:

  • Unique Links for UGC Requests: Instead of a generic link in the Instagram Profile Bio, Nosto will now generate a unique link for each piece of UGC the customer wants to request rights for.

  • Direct Message Requirement: To ensure only the content creator can approve rights, the unique link must be shared via Direct Message (DM) instead of being publicly posted in a comment.

You can find the new setup instructions and the updated steps for requesting rights here.

What Do Customers Need to Do to Prepare?

  • Remove the Bio Link: Customers currently using the Rights via Registration link in their Instagram Bio should remove it by December 3rd, 2024.

What Do Customers Need to Do after the release of this new flow?

  • Template Messages:

    • Existing template messages for public comments will still be available. These can be used to inform content creators that a DM with further steps has been sent.

    • A new default template message for DMs will also be provided. Customers are encouraged to customize it to align with their brand’s tone.

  • No Changes to the Registration Form: Existing customizations in the Rights via Registration Form will remain compatible with the new flow.

Will the New Flow Be Supported in the Chrome Extension?

Yes! The updated flow will be fully integrated into the Nosto UGC Chrome Extension. Customers can continue requesting rights directly while navigating Instagram.
